Lessons and Carols is a worship service format developed over the centuries from Scripture-filled services such as Morning Prayer or Matins. This morning’s service is designed closely after the format developed early in the 20th century for Christmas Eve celebrations at the magnificent chapel at King’s College in Cambridge, England. The “sermon” is preached through the reading of God’s Word and musical responses by choir and congregation. Lessons and Carols will place great emphasis on the foundational principles of Advent - the coming of the Kingdom, the prophecies of Christ, the preceding events to Christ’s birth as seen in the Virgin Mary, and the developing reality of Christ’s coming to save the world.
